Spin Splitting and Even-Odd Effects in Carbon Nanotubes
نویسندگان
چکیده
The level spectrum of a single-walled carbon nanotube rope, studied by transport spectroscopy, shows Zeeman splitting in a magnetic field parallel to the tube axis. The pattern of splittings implies that the spin of the ground state alternates by 12 as consecutive electrons are added. Other aspects of the Coulomb blockade characteristics, including the current-voltage traces and peak heights, also show corresponding even-odd effects. [S0031-9007(98)06652-6]

Multiwall carbon nanotubes as quantum dots.
We have measured the differential conductance of individual multiwall carbon nanotubes. Coulomb blockade and energy level quantization are observed. The electron levels are nearly fourfold degenerate (including spin) and their evolution in magnetic field (Zeeman splitting) agrees with a g factor of 2. In zero magnetic field the sequential filling of states evolves with spin S according to S = 0...
متن کاملItinerant flat-band magnetism in hydrogenated carbon nanotubes.
We investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of hydrogenated carbon nanotubes using ab initio spin-polarized calculations within both the local density approximation (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). We find that the combination of charge transfer and carbon network distortion makes the spin-polarized flat-band appear in the tube's energy gap. Various spin-depende...
متن کاملSpin-orbit coupling in nearly metallic chiral carbon nanotubes: a density-functional based study.
Spin-orbit interaction in carbon nanotubes has been under debate for several years and a variety of theoretical calculations and experimental results have been published. Here, we present an accurate implementation of spin-orbit interactions in a density-functional theory framework including both core and valence orbital contributions, thus using the full potential of the system. We find that t...
متن کاملSpin-vibration interaction in a nanomechanical spin-valve
We study spin-dependent transport in a suspended carbon nanotube quantum dot in contact with two ferromagnetic leads and with the dot’s spin coupled to the flexural modes. We consider a spinvibrational interaction inducing spin-flip processes between the two Zeeman levels of the dot due to spin-orbit interaction or a magnetic field gradient. The inelastic vibration-assisted spin-flips give rise...
متن کاملSignatures of spin-orbit interaction in transport properties of finite carbon nanotubes in a parallel magnetic field
The transport properties of finite nanotubes placed in a magnetic field parallel to their axes are investigated. Upon including spin-orbit coupling and curvature effects, two main phenomena are analyzed that crucially depend on the tube’s chirality: (i) Finite carbon nanotubes in a parallel magnetic field may present a suppression of current due to the localization at the edges of otherwise con...
